For centuries, Istanbul served as the capital of three empires - the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman - and as a center for three major religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Many other cities which once accepted Istanbul as their capital are now capitals in their own right and they are spread across three continents.

This fact has cused people from dozens of different countries, ethnic groups and religions to gather, live and work in Istanbul. The city's long experience of cultural diversity has enabled Istanbul to design a "Sui Generis" concept of cosmopolitanism.
